Japan has one of the highest rates of suicide for any developed country, with an average of 70 people taking their own lives every day. Each day, retired police detective Yukio Shige patrols the Tojinbo Cliffs, an area that has become a notoriously popular destination for suicides in Japan. Shige monitors the cliffs, talking individuals away from the steep drop, then takes them to a local cafe and works with volunteers to help those in need of mental health treatment. So far, because of his self-imposed duty, Shige has saved more than 500 people. (via Instagram.com/news)
